Chapter 12 – Ronald
The First Infantry Battalion marched in heavy rain from Kensington at 9:00am to Fort Macquarie at Bennalong Point (the site now occupied by the Sydney Opera House), and was taken in ferry boats to transport ship A.19 Afric , anchored in Farm Cove on Sunday 18 October. The Afric left Sydney Harbour late that afternoon, bound for Albany. Accounts are provided in The History of the First Battalion A.I.F 1914-1919 , pp16-17; The First Infantry Battalion War Diary.
According to the Randwick Council website, the road from Kensington Racecourse towards Sydney City was renamed as “Anzac Parade” in 1917, to commemorate the first troops of the Australian Imperial Force paraded down the road to embark for overseas service.
